Europe Must Now Lie In The Bed It Has Made…Together

Alex has just written the following. Tell me what you think please!

The short-lived buoyancy provided by the Eurozone’s announcement of the ‘three pronged’ stability agreement has given way to the more warranted senses of doubt and uncertainty. This lack of trust, manifested in a market nose-dive this week, is the reasonable reaction to an agreement which is almost entirely lacking in both short and long term credibility.

Imminently, the principal arbiters of the deal have shown they have no faith in the promises the plan purports to be able to deliver. In Greece, the call for a referendum on whether or not the country goes bust is cause for some alarm. Increasing social unrest, staunch anti-European public opinion and a potential vote of no confidence in the government are all signs of a machine that is in dire need of critical attention. That there was so much surprise from Germany and France following Papandreou’s referendum announcement shows the emergency engineers have no idea what kind of machine they have been called to fix.

An affirmative vote by the Greek people on an effective return to the Drachma would create nothing short of unmitigated chaos. A worthless currency, an ostracised economy, a legal firestorm and social anarchy are the high prices Athens will pay for an action we must assume is unthinkable, since it is conspicuous only in its absence from the Lisbon Treaty.
The possible long term future created by the deal also holds little to no cause for optimism. The sheer scale of the fund required for the bank recapitalisation hinges on Chinese involvement and while this is not in itself a problem, the fact the rest of the deal is unlikely to cure the ever spreading disease of the single currency all but guarantees further Franco-German fundraising envoys to the Far East. Beijing cannot be expected or relied upon to foot the bill for Spanish or Italian sized bailouts especially when it is currently acting as the lender of only resort to the United States. After all, the dragon’s gift of a decade long credit glut to the US has been one of the principal causes for the ailing super power’s substantial problems. Mao embossed blank cheques for the West cannot continue to be considered an option.

Instead, Europe must look to itself for an end to its woes. No one would have started here, given the choice, but that must stop us from making bad decisions now. The only way the Eurozone can continue is to become tighter and more unified. The European Central Bank must wake up and become the director of both monetary and fiscal policy on the continent. The competing actions and wishes of the Federal Reserve Banks of New York and Chicago crippled US economic policy during the 1930s and France and Germany will become guilty of a dangerous re-run of history if they continue as they seemingly intend to. The ECB must also be given the option and should not delay in the creation of a Eurobond which would shore up the required capital for stability in Europe. This would not only avoid a nasty backlash from tax-strangled citizens but free them from dependence on a China that for now, but surely not for long, expects no guaranteed return on its investment.

There are many calling for the abolition of the Euro and history so far, at any rate, may have proved the single currency an unwise experiment to run. Now though, France, Germany, Greece, Italy et al must all jump into bed together, which may be easier for Berlusconi than for Merkel. While this bed may look uncomfortable at the moment, action now could give us new feather down in the duvets and pillows. Continuing as we are, however, would risk turning our old, hard mattress into a bed of rusty nails.

A True Hero – Aged 14!

Josh – a true star! Take this opportunity; take the easy route; simply make that well deserved DONATION NOW… Simply Click Here

It’s been seven days since 14 year old Josh King and his Dad set off from Lands End on an Epic Cycle Adventure to London, raising funds on behalf of Help for Heroes. And what a journey it’s been; one of undulating roads and emotions! Last Friday, 2nd September they started at 06.00 from a mist shrouded Lands End, going via Lamorna, to say their goodbyes to friends and family.

Day 1 saw them travel up to Bodmin Moor and traversing Cornish hills and valleys in baking, burnt sunshine. Exhausted, they set up camp, settled about a fire, ate sausages and beans and mapped their route for the next day. Cruelly, I delighted in saying my goodnight to Josh with a gentle reminder and a wry chuckle about the recent sightings of  the Beast of Bodmin and a warning that under no circumstances should he fall deeply asleep.

Day 2 proved even harder. The weather was against them….driving rain,  fog following them across the borders of The Tamar and into Devon only to be met by 16 mile inclines up onto Dartmoor in ever decreasing visibility. They spent another this time, cold damp night in isolation, stranded on the moors, out of mobile range and miles from any amenities.

Day 3 took them across the remaining part of Dartmoor back into civilisation and not a moment too soon, as Josh’s bike buckled as his bearings went. They managed to find a Cycle Shop in the wilds of Devon, not part of the original planned route and while the bikes were being serviced, took time out to eat and rest. Then it was onto Honiton for a nights stop over.

Day 4 saw them lost. With atrocious worsening weather conditions they were forced off the A Roads onto minor back ways, for safety reasons. Along with this, the GPS locators on their mobiles failed and they found themselves utterly off course. After a lot of extra miles, tempers flaring, a couple of minor incidents resulting in cuts & bruises, they bedded down in Shaftsbury.

Day 5 took them into Salisbury and a cheer up meal in Pizza Hut – possibly the only time you might be grateful of encountering an “All You Can Eat” Menu for just £6. Then there was just enough time to take a brief walk about the city and visit the cathedral. Replenished, it was back on the bikes and off to Andover. But their problems were just beginning….Believe it or not there are no camp sites in or around the place and no farmers happy to oblige, so the boys were forced to cycle an extra 20 miles further onto the outskirts of Newbury, in the dark!

Day 6 Took them from Newbury to Wokingham and the joys of facing home county drivers and traffic! Sheer delight… but finally to a place of true warmth and rest. Josh’s grandparents. Most importantly of all though – hot baths and clean clothes.

The Final Day they travelled through horrendous traffic from Wokingham onto Josh’s school – Elmgreen  in London SE27. They arrived at 3pm to a rapturous welcome from teachers and pupils alike, plus press and photographers.

All I can say is how proud I am of Josh. He’s spent over 1 year dedicated to training for this event, and seven days covering over 320 miles in hellish conditions, travelling across all terrains, in rain and gales without one complaint.

Making a Difference – A Guest Blog

Are we truly aware of the devastation of warfare; the acuteness, its long term effects, not just to the individuals and families soldiering our front-lines, but to humanity as a whole? Or maybe an overload of information has simply acclimatised us, rendered us dull. News reporting 24/7, the constant bombardment of images of death or injury from war and combat – It seems to be unending, like a creeping, cancerous tumor, coming ever closer to each of us and yet as a whole, we appear to remain emotionally barren, numbed into immunity.

And as I sit and type, all I can think is that my stepson, Josh, just 14 years old, has spent over half his entire life knowing nothing but war. If peace were to be achieved today, he would have to reach the age of 21 before being able to strike a comparison between the two. That is the real tragedy of his generation and those to follow.

Today Josh, with his Dad as support, are cycling across Cornwall on their first stretch of a journey, taking them from Lands End to London. They are covering over 320 miles in order to help raise funds to support Help for Heroes.

This “Epic Adventure” started over a year ago on the death of local lad, Lance Corporal Darren Hicks, who was killed in combat in Afghanistan, February 2010. All of us here in Lamorna, Paul, Sheffield, Penzance and of course Mousehole were shocked and heartbroken, but it inspired Josh to translate his thoughts into actions – to try and tangibly make a difference and honor this man and the many others, with the true acknowledgement and respect they deserve.

I’m proud to say, that from that day forward Josh committed himself both physically and mentally to the task by training daily, on his bike, in the gym or swimming in freezing sea waters to get himself to a level of fitness to achieve this ride. Josh is not my son, I am not looking at him through rose-tinted glasses with a parents bias, I am telling all and everyone that this boy deserves support as does this charity.

Dreaming in Lamorna!

Tortilla Recipe

Tortillas are one of the staples of Mexican cuisine, served up fried as tacos, rolled into soft burritos or layered as enchiladas. The history of tortillas dates back to 10000 BC. Later, it was popularized when a peasant prepared this flat corn bread to the Mayan king. Missionaries later spread the recipe for tortillas throughout California, and today flour tortillas are favored over white bread for their versatility and low fat content. Hi, Im Jason Hill of Chef Tips outside the Mission Tortilla Factory in Anaheim. Lets head back to the kitchen and learn how to make homemade tortillas. To prepare this flour tortilla recipe, you only need four ingredients: flour, baking powder, vegetable shortening or lard and salt. First, stir 4 cups all purpose flour and 1/8 teaspoon baking powder in a large bowl. Next add 1/2 cup of shortening or lard into the mixture and work the fat into the flour with your hands. Dissolve 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt into 1 1/2 cups of warm water. Drizzle this slowly into the flour mixture and mix until you have a soft dough. Knead for 1 minute, adding flour or small amounts of lukewarm water if needed. The dough should not be too wet or dry. Once it is at the right consistency, turn bowl over to cover the dough and let it rest for about 20 minutes. Next, divide the dough into 12 pieces and form into balls. As you form and roll the balls, coat your hands with a little bit of shortening. Flatten and cover balls with plastic wrap and let rest for 20-30

How to Find Good Recipes

Where to find Good Recipes:  Books and Websites

There are numerous recipe books in the marketplace and an array of websites which provide good recipes. Most of the websites and books have categorized recipes and you have to decide which category you want to choose.  Whether you are a housewife or professional, good recipes are available in many places and you should use them to make a recipe book for your needs later.

The “Good Cook” website also has categorized recipes.  You can browse their site by choosing your favorite food, or you can choose their recipe categories.  Select the category which you want and try it out. Their categories range from beverages, bread, main course, seafood and fish to nutrition and health or outdoor cooking. You can get vegetarian food and the different types of meat.  There are recipes for special dishes from various regions, various countries and continents and there are recipes which have special diets like low carb, for weight loss or diabetics.

This website also gives you some innovative ideas like baking up cookies for family fun or crock pot recipes to enjoy.  Just try them out to get some quality time with your family on the weekend.

You may find exciting recipes on the internet like Beer for Beginners, or 54 Ways to Lose Weight, or even Easy to Make Omelets. On the bbc.co.uk website, you can do a quick recipe search by searching for three ingredients: recipe title, chef or the TV program. There are often interesting wine suggestions as well with the recipes.

On the BBC recipe site you can find a recipe according to the main ingredient, the occasion , meal, taste, texture, cuisine, cooking method, provider and dish.  Often there is also a lot of information provided about the recipe and also the nutritional value, so that you know what you are cooking.

The Yahoo Food and Recipe site has many food videos and they are a pleasure to watch.  The recipes for low-fat are the favorites and once you have tried them out, you can rate them as well.  The “healthy categories” are also popular nowadays, so they could be the categories called Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Low Calorie, Low Fat and Low Sugar.

The Hub UK site offers recipes, cookery, food and even a cooking vacation.  The recipe given by this site of the famous Yorkshire pudding is one of the best. The site has thousands of recipes again divided into numerous categories.

Indiaplaza.in has recipes from all over the world.  The database of good cooking recipes on this website is growing continuously.  There is also elaborated information about all the ingredients and directions, so all that you have to do is follow instructions meticulously.

Look for new recipes on Bush’s Best Beans and even the simplest recipes are available here.  The link is http://www.bushbeans.com/recipes/recipes.php.  Finally, a good recipe is what you make of it, by giving each dish a personal touch. For western cooking the measurements are important, and if you take the correct quantities of ingredients nothing can go wrong.  But the oriental cuisine does not demand such exactness, and you can slow down while you are cooking, because you can add or change some of the ingredients mentioned in the recipe.

At the Shoppbox Ebook Reviews there is a variety of recipe ebooks to choose from.
Everything from Oriental to Low Carb recipes can be found there.

A Recipe Finder Can Be A Time Saver

How many times have you wanted to make a particular chicken recipe or one of your heart healthy recipes and just couldn’t remember which recipe book it was in? If you have ever been in this kind of situation you will know very well what I mean. Without a recipe finder, it can be very difficult to look for the recipe you intend making.

So what exactly is a recipe finder? It is something that helps you find your recipes quick and fast; no matter if they are chicken recipes, healthy recipes, low calorie recipes, lunch recipes, baking recipes or any other. If you have a lot of recipe books, then you can keep a notebook with some pages reserved for each letter of the alphabet with which that recipe name begins. Or better still, invest in a folder and you can go on adding pages as you feel the need. Here, under chicken recipes, you can write the recipe name and the page number and book name it comes from if it a cookbooks recipe.

Or now in the age of the computer, you can create a file with all these details and this kind of recipe finder might be even faster than the manual one saving you even more time when you are looking for your healthy recipes or family recipes. All you have to do is use the find option by pressing the Ctrl and F keys on your keyboard simultaneously and key in the word or phrase that you are looking for. Very soon you will have located the recipes that you have been looking for.

Yet another recipe finder available is in the form of a search engine where you key in “healthy recipes” and are greeted by a great long list which will take you quite some time to sift through to get the ideal recipe you might be looking for. Another way is to visit recipe websites. Some provide you with recipe finders that let you browse by category whether it is chicken recipes, dinner recipes, recipes meals and the like; others let you browse by ingredients.

As the days get shorter and colder and winter approaches, we look for comfort foods. These foods are rich in fat and high in carbohydrates which can be devastating if you are asked to restrict yourself to healthy recipes. Mashed potatoes, macaroni with cheese, meatloaf and cakes are some of the hot favorites. If you make use of a recipe finder on the Net you are sure to find some free recipes that will provide you with substitutes for some ingredients which you should avoid.

While making mashed potatoes the next time, add some roasted cauliflower. Replace the whole milk and butter with some skimmed milk and some chicken brother which is low in sodium. Add a dash of salt and pepper. Thus you can make your own healthy recipes even if you are not happy with what the recipe finder on the Net gives you.

So start searching the Net for healthy recipes now! The recipe finder is very useful and will help you collect a lot of good free recipes.

Inspiration or desperation

Cashew nuts, roasted and salted.

Image via Wikipedia

Good evening readers

I have been requested to plan and create a vegan meal and I hope that the following will scintillate the tastebuds. I think a side order of rare beef would be good! I have struggled with the recipe but my great friend from the Dunston Hall hotel near Norwich has helped

Mushroom and Chestnut Wellington

Ingredients

I x large chopped onion

1 x tbsp of olive oil

2 x finely chopped cloves of garlic

41/2 oz of slighted chestnut mushrooms

4oz of ground cashew nuts

4oz of cooked chestnuts( tinned are fine)

4oz of soft wholemeal breadcrumbs

1 x tbsp of soy sauce

1 tbsp of lemon juice

1 x tbsp of mixed herbs

1/2 tsp of yeast extract

Puff pastry ( packaged is fine and you need about 12 oz

Soya milk

Method

Fry the onions until golden brown and add the garlic and mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes. Blend with the chestnuts, lemon juice, soya sauce and yeast extract

Put the mixture into a mixing bowl with the breadcrumbs, cashews and herbs and season and mix robustly. ( the mix will be quite stiff)

Roll the pastry out on a lightly dusted board to make a rectangle about the size of a sheet of A4. Transfer the pastry to a lightly oiled baking tray and heap the mixture in the centre, forming it into the shape of a loaf of bread.

Make diagonal cuts in the pastry 1cm apart on each side of the mushroom mixture, then fold these up and over to give a plait effect. Tuck, trim and brush with soya milk.

Bake at 200c for 40 minutes until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.

This is really nice. I love it.

Mmmm

What do you think?

Food You Can’t Miss On UK Tours!

You cannot afford not to sample some traditional British food whilst on UK tours. The rich, meaty dishes have become a firm favourite amongst travellers of these countries, with many citing them as the highlight of their trip! If you are pushed for time on your trip, then make sure you don’t miss out on these four traditional British meals.

England, Traditional Sunday Roast

The Sunday roast is the cornerstone of every English family’s week. You have an opportunity to sample a slice of an Englishman’s life if your UK tours mean you are in England on a Sunday; an opportunity you cannot afford to miss. Along with a freshly cooked joint of meat, your dish will be served with plenty of vegetables and roast potatoes.

Scotland, Haggis

Many people are initially put off by the idea of eating a sheep’s stomach; however, once they taste this traditional Scottish delicacy they will start to wonder why. Eating haggis is an absolute must when your UK tours pull into Scotland. This dish is usually served with turnip and potatoes (or ‘neeps and tatties’ to the locals).

Wales, Welsh rarebit

No UK tours are complete without a stop in Wales and no stop in Wales is complete without a portion of Welsh rarebit. This dish is made with a savoury cheese sauce, served hot over toasted bread. You will get served a different regional variation of this meal depending on where you are in Wales, so watch out. Don’t forget, this dish tastes even better with homemade Welsh chutney.

Ireland, Irish Stew

This traditional Irish dish is made from lamb and mutton, as well as carrots, onions and parsley. There is no better way to celebrate Irish culture than with this hearty stew. When served hot, this dish will warm you up on those blustery, cold days that Ireland is famous for. If you fancy a few pints of Irish stout in the evening then make sure you line your stomach with a hearty Irish stew beforehand!

So these are the four main dishes you should go out of your way to sample whilst on UK tours. There are plenty of other local dishes across the United Kingdom that are equally as nice and worth keeping an eye out for. Food plays a massive part in the make-up of the United Kingdom’s culture; make sure you celebrate it on your UK tours.
